“Heaven Can Wait” is the story of Henry Van Cleve (Don Ameche) who was convinced he knew were his soul was to spend eternity after his demise. As Van Cleve stands before the gates of eternal damnation he is told that his admittance to Hell is in question. He then begins to recount his life beginning with his birth and his love for his mother, Bertha Van Cleve (Spring Byington) and the troubled relationship he had with his father, Albert Van Cleve (Allyn Joslyn). However it becomes apparent that his no admittance into hell has to do with his wonderful marriage to his wife, Martha Van Cleve (Gene Tierney).
